MEMORY CARD FOR DIGITAL CAMERA
Camera need a film to save the picture, first film camera have a single film,
so the photographer should change the film each time finish take one object.
At the year 1888, the film roll for camera was discover, so from that time,
photographer didn't need to change the film after take one object. This is very
important, because take multiple picture become easy without take take to change
every single film.
Now, since digital camera discover and develop each time to time, memory is
one of the most important think to save the picture to digital camera. The shoot
is become more fun and easy, because we could save the picture many time, and
the latest digital camera have LCD to review the picture stored at memory, and
delete if we don't like the result.
The price of digital camera become more cheaper compare by the size, today
you could easy find memory card more than just 1G, with many different brand
and speed. The speed is important because this will help us to take shoot to
shoot (continuous capture) and also help to minimize the time to save and review
many picture store at that memory card.
We can also choose how many picture could store at that memory, by choose the
resolution and image compress. More bigger resolution, will need more size to
save. More compress the picture will make the file size become smaller, but
the image compress will reduce the beauty of color. But for some reason, we
don't need to save with big resolution and uncompress picture, right ?
Memory card have many type in the market and also depend of brand for each
kind. That's why we suggest to consider what type of memory card to use before
we buy digital camera. How big the size of memory for your digital camera will
also need to consider because it is important to take more event more picture
before the capacity get full.
1. Compact Flash I and Compact Flash II (MicroDrive)
CompactFlash (CF) is one of the most comman memory for digital camera, all
digital SLR are compatible to use Compact Flash. There are 2 kind of compact
flash, each kind have the different physical size. Compact Flash Type I and
Type II. The different of that kind of compact flash is the capacity. Compact
Flash II usually have a higer capacity, this compact flash have the mechanical
such as small hard disk drive. This kind of compact flash know by MicroDrive
memory Card.
The camera digital usually tell in the specification that it support for CompactFlash
I or CompactFlash II, because the physical size of CompactFlash II is thicker
than CompactFlash I.
The main benefit for CompactFlash, besides the price, compatibility and availability,
is that it has a controller chip in the card. The controller chip allows higher
transfer rates. Most cameras can not take advantage of this extra speed, though.
Only cameras with larger internal buffers - mostly digital SLRs - can take advantage
of high-speed CompactFlash.
CompactFlash is cheap and easy to find, and compatible in many digital cameras.
For those reasons, it's one of the most desirable types of digital camera memory.
2. Secure Digital & MultiMedia Cards
Secure Digital (SD) is the smallest memory cards available, Secure Digital
and MultiMediaCard memory design for very small cameras and also can be used
in selected PDA, phones, and MP3 players. The maximum capacity is lower than
CompactFlash..
The only difference between the two memory types (Secure Digital and MultiMedia
Card) is that Secure Digital cards have a write-protect switch for added data
security. The Secure Digital memory card also have faster speed than MultiMedia
Card.
3. xD Picture Cards
This memory card introduced by Fuji and Olympus in year 2002, the xD Picture
card is the newest digital camera memory format. Its tiny size - 0.97"
x 0.98" x 0.67" - means it also can be used in very small cameras.
The xD Picture Card also can be used in any CompactFlash compatible camera with
using the CompactFlash adapter.
Because it was developed and introduced by Fuji and Olymous, most current compact
digital cameras from those manufacturers use the xD Picture Card media.
4. Memory Stick
Memory Stick was introduce and developed by Sony for CyberShot digital camera.
This memory card also use for other Sony electronic device, such as camcoder
and Sony audio player. This memory stick only compatible with digital camera
produce by Sony.
5. SmartMedia
SmartMedia is also common type for digital camera to store the picture. This memory
card most used in Fuji and Olympus before their introduce xD Picture card in 2002.
